Today

Left out early this morning with the ice house in tow, headed towards my folks in Howard City...I've decided to use the double axle trailer for the trip to Frankfort as well as the 3/4 ton Duramax truck. The Trooper struggled with the grades.

Told ya so.

Chuck was like 17, I was 14…The best thing about Chuck was that he had wheels, I needed wheels to get me to my dealers place in Grand Rapids, I was a mid level distributor… Ted Nugent was going to be at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, I talked my folks into letting me go, my first concert …Tickets were procured. Chuck managed to talk a senior, Anne into going and the group was rounded out with an friend of mine Brad…Chuck was geeked about getting this date, if I was him I’d would’ a ditched us kids…The show was great …Ted came out swinging on a rope, the guy was amazing…

Back in our home town, Chuck wheels into the 7-11 and prepares to roll a joint…I immediately voiced my objections, not about smoking a joint, but the location…Chuck trying to be suave in front of Anne, and dismissed my objections. Lighting the joint and putting it into a power hitter, chuck takes another hit and passes it back as he’s pulling out of the parking lot, I see the cops parked right a crossed the street…They come right after, and pull us over, chuck gets hauled to jail and Anne drives Brad and I home…the next day I say …I told ya so !

Right place, Right time

The Grand Rapids civic center was a smallish arena, almost intimate as arena's go. Headlining the show was Ozzy, it was the summer of 1981 August 30th. Opening for Ozzy was a little know band, Def Leppard... While not overly impressive, these guys where just kids then, they played a good set. I never really saw it coming, but as it came down out of the lights, end over end, I was there to catch it...the first of a few drum sticks I'd catch in all the shows I'd end up seeing...Surly catching a stick was high lite. But what I was most impressed with was Randy Rhodes, Ozzy's guitarist. I've seen many of the best and he was one of them. Seven months later he was gone...I'd go on to see those kids a few more times, I still got that stick...

Growing old

Today I saw the doctor for the first time in a decade, of course he put me on blood pressure meds...I knew that it was only a matter of time...he also gave me grief for using creatine, I knew that was coming too.

Climategate: You should be steamed

But who are the skeptics? A few examples reveal that they are numerous and well-qualified. Several years ago two scientists at the University of Oregon became so concerned about the overemphasis on man-made global warming that they put a statement on their Web site and asked for people's endorsement; 32,000 have signed the petition, including more than 9,000 Ph.Ds. /snip/ Last year 60 German scientists sent a letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel urging her to “strongly reconsider” her position supporting man-made global warming. Sixty scientists in Canada took similar action.

Haha...Oh, the joke's on all of us

Why Switzerland Has The Lowest Crime Rate In The World

Swiped from Rodger

Cold last night !

As I approached my truck this morning to start it and get it warmed for the trip I was to take, noticed something odd on the inside of the drivers side window. Opening the door and upon further examination I deduced it was frozen soda.

Of course my eyes begin to scan the interior for the source...it came from the back...

And the source...Somehow this can of soda made its way into my truck and was forgotten, I'm thinking kids, since I very seldom drink the stuff...

How time flies

My Christmas / New years vacation is on it's last day. Rising at 04:30 tomorrow to see the gym is going to be tough; even more so, that I've not been there for weeks... I've spent the last two weeks do pretty much whatever I felt like doing and to be honest, I'm ready to go back to work. I don't know if its just the specter of knowing I have to go back that won't let me completely relax, I hope retirement is better.

As of yet I don't have any plans for this last day, I should go fishing, but I may opt for something entirely different...

Yesterday I rigged up a towing system for the ice house using cables that I salvaged from the trash at work 5 years ago, see I knew I could use them for something ! I was leaning towards a rigid tow bar system, but I think this will work out better. I've got another week to do a few more odds and end, debating on a paint job. But that would mean getting it back into the shop...

Beautiful day

Another beautiful day here in West Michigan, still very cold 15 degrees, but the sun is out and shinning bright with a little lite snow... I'm working on a towing system for the ice house...

Ordinance

Ice house video

.

Okay, now I've beat the ice house topic to death ... hahaha ...no more for a while.

Observations

Alright; its not orgasmic, not really even in that same realm, but I just took a very long, hot shower and with a brand new razor shaved of weeks worth of growth. Such a great feeling, I feel like I'm ready to start a new year. I know what your thinking,"WTF is up with that ?" Well, I just felt like sharing...

Thursday, December 31, 2009

It's the end of the year as we know it ...

I don't do resolutions. I do however resolve to have a better garden this year as well as a new 23 quart pressure cooker. And to not instigate any armed insurrections against the corrupt government; although, participation is a wholly different topic...

Shopping

This evening Ross and I went out to Best Buy, he was going to spend birthday and Christmas money on a new flat panel monitor. We settled on a LG 20" wide screen. After that we hit Manards, right next door for a new lock set for the shop back door. The handle came right off in my hand today. I had a extra key made for the ice house door too...

Working inside the shanty

I pushed the shanty up to and just inside the overhead door so I can open the door and work inside

I've put in benches and shelves...I'll be putting in a couple of fold down work benches too.

Change

I really need a change of scenery, both physically and mentally, more of the latter. I've a feeling of traveling an endless road, not sure if I'm moving forward or the landscape is passing me by.

New ice house: update

I was able to get the new shanty out of the shop. Still needs a door and trimmings...I've been hitting the gravel pit taking 10 or 15 fish at a trip, I hate cleaning more than that at once...

12/26 The door is on and I've got the heater running...still much to do.

Christmas Day

Nothing but coal here...Maybe I'll do better at the folks place... Pouring rain here, better than the ice we where getting last night...

Me Too !!!

Ice fishing

Hit the gravel pit pond first thing this morning. This pond is small and produces well at first and gets fished out quickly. I was out for a couple hours and managed a 1/2 limit. I made a short video clip while I was out there...

I've been neglecting this space lately, due to many factors...Busy, busy, busy...all week each night I've been butchering that deer and that task is complete. Ive got the next two weeks off from work and have a list of to do's a mile long : )

Strange how things happen

This morning I was all about being done hunting for the year...And I was really, but as luck would have it, I shot a deer this morning. When hunting with a muzzle loader its practice to fire the loaded round when putting the weapon into storage, it possible to pull the breech plug and remove the powder and bullet, but I would rather just fire the round off...

All that said, I was going to fire the loaded round but thought I would first walk to the edge of my folks yard, which drops off abruptly down it the old creek bed...I'm doing this because I know deer bed down in this area, today was one of those days...On my hands and knees creeping around at the ridge, just out of sight of the two deer I saw, I put myself in position for a shot...Only to have the deer I was watching move into heavy brush and out of the shooting lane despite my calling to it... just then the second deer stands and walks into the lane, it was now or never...The shot wasn't great, but good enough, though the elbow and lung...The deer ran about 20 meters and expired...

Personal notes

I'm conceding defeat to the deer at this point, as a benevolent loser this season...I passed up shots I could have taken, Oh well...

My sights are now focused of the upcoming ice fishing season, I've got a shanty to finish and plans to retrofit another.

Storm of the century

I'm home early today, just for the opposite reason sometimes I'm not home until 20:00...This part of Michigan is supposed to be getting a "big winter storm" I'm not holding my breath. The media in these parts are famous for playing up the winter weather...

Injured

Even typing is painful. I pulled a shoulder muscle lifting this morning and now I'm really beginning to feel it. The ibuprofen has brought it down from Samurai sword cutting my arm off to extreme charlie horse...right now I'm not sure what's better

This goes without saying

I came pretty close to posting this as my profile pic at IP tonight...Just in that mood !

Edgy

Damn...I really feel like capping someone this evening, just cranky for some reason...anyhow...my day went by fast, Mondays are like that for me. After work I picked up oil and a filter for the quad. I had drained the oil and removed the filter last night, after reassembling the filter housing and filling the crankcase I started the motor. It was running okay, had a bit of a stumble now and then, I've got the gallon of gas I put in doped up with 10 oz of Seafoam (carb cleaner) might be why its a little rough...

I'll be hunting again this weekend, I was able to get a co-worker to lend me a black powder rifle, I just have to sight it in for him...black powder season begins the 4th until the 20th...see ya in the woods, okay I probably won't...

04:30

I'm climbing back on the wagon. I haven't seen the gym in two weeks, so at 04:30 I'll be getting up for a 06:00 workout. I was having issues with a separated muscle in my right forearm, still bothering me a bit in a gripping position.

I really need to get back to my lifting.

Right now

This morning I'm making venison burger. I've been trimming meat for the last two hours and I've stopped for lunch. There's at least ten more pounds of venison to trim and then the pork shoulder has to be cubed up, and then the grinding can begin.

Up Date

The venison is all ground and in the freezer...19 pounds

Climaquiddick

I mean really now, someone or many are going to have to do some time over this...These MFCS were getting set to put the screws to a lot of folks (cap & trade) and there are people in Onocchio's administration that would be set up to make massive profits off this. Thank God these unscrupulous bastards have been outed.

Check this out...the more I read the more I'm getting pissed off ...make sure to read the comments as well

If you think you've had a bad day

The rest of the story
This has not turned out to be a productive year in regards to deer hunting. The entire season seems hurried, I'm blaming my work schedule for that. As usual, I'm left regretting the few shots I passed up early in the season. There are certainly fewer deer in the area for whatever the reason, probable man made global warming that caused the rough winter.

All that aside we still have another month of archery season...

Life under the Snowbelt

So much for global warming; or climate change as those in house of flawed science and selectively reviewing data are now calling it to cover what weather does…change.

Here in West Michigan, we’re having blizzard like conditions; it’s February, I expect this type of weather. And in four months when its 95, I won’t be shocked either, it happens in summer.

Speaking of Craigslist

I mentioned a response on my car for sale, well here's the reply to my 1st reply:

thanks for your response. I am okay with the price and the conditions. I would have come to check it out, but it's just that i am a very busy person and i am out of state for now. I would make Payment to you via Certified Cashiers check and i understand it must clear your bank before you release item to me. I will also be responsible for the pick up and shipping. So, all you will do as soon as you get the payment check is to get it cashed, deduct your money for the item and send the rest to my shipper whose name and address will be enclosed in the envelope of the check, so that they can come for the pick up at your residence.
Hope i can trust you with my money? cos i dont wanna be scammed again.
If this is okay with you, please get back to me with your....
Names, full contact address(city, state and zipcode) and your phone Number.
Do get back to me asap so that i can issue out the payment check to you via UPS next day delivery. kindly remove the item from site so that no one will contact you for it.
Regards.

And being the smart a** I am here's what I wrote back:

Hey Deb,

There's a problem, see I'm on the run from the law. So I have to keep a low profile so I can't go into banks or anyplace with camera's where the FBI might see me. This would have to be a in person deal, I'm very familiar with dealing with large sums of money and contraband and am always well armed, so as to insure a deal goes off without a hitch, well except for that last one, but he drew first. Anyhow I'm really anxious to unload this car the upholstery is freshly clean and there's also a new passenger window, so I hope you’re not just yanking my chain.

Fall back

Tomorrow I will fall back into the rut of working out in the morning before work. I’ve taken off a month due to a vacation and starting a new position at work.

Craigslist

I really like Craigslist classifieds, I've made three sales over the last 30 days. No fees, no hassle. I would have not likely ever been able to make those sales on ebay. I've got a car up for sale right now and have gotten a response already.

Yes, I still come here

Someone has to. I've been busy, haven't we all heard that excuse before. Most of November I was hunting and now at work I've been promoted to manager, but luckily, I still get to keep all my engineering responsibilities, yes that was sarcasm. Overall it's been a smooth transition.

TGIF

The week went well, was able to get quite a bit of work done. Today I picked up a new wheel bearing and axle for my Accord. With any luck I can get it back together this weekend.

The day after Hump Day

Not to much going on, my back is getting better, worked out this morning, no more sharp pains. Glad tomorrows Friday. I spent this evening tearing apart the drivers side, front end of my Honda. Needs new axles, ball joints, and at least a new wheel bearing on the side I've got apart. I really do enjoy working on cars, especially when I can take my time.

Oh!!! my aching back!

Everything was fine until I moved from my chair this morning, like a sword through my lower back. As of now I can't really tell if its getting better, I don't think the three hour design review meeting this afternoon helped. I normally don't get sick or have pains like this, I lifted at the gym this morning and can't really remember doing anything to hurt my back. The only way this may have happened is when I was doing sets of fly's, I normally sit up at the end of the set and set the dumbbells in front of me; today, once I just set the weights down to my sides while still laying on the bench I think thats what did it.

Sunday, October 21, 2007

This weekend

Instead of hunting like I should have been doing, I've been playing domestic God all weekend. Today's chore was to fix a damaged chair. Before and......

After, better then new. Yesterday it was a tear out and rebuild of the commode, but I'll spare you the pictures of that.

Urban Hunter

I’ve taken up urban squirrel hunting, not as much for the love of hunting, but to rid the neighborhood of the tree rat. With many walnut trees in close proximity to my property the nuts draw them in, them being the “Red squirrel” (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) they’ve ran out all the fox and gray squirrels and have taken over the habitat….more to come.

Eye opener

As I drove east on Cleveland to turn north on Ravenna road and drive the last 10 mile leg of my 40 mile commute, I saw something remarkable. What I saw from a distance, at first confused me, a truck backing up in the opposing lane. As I drove near the truck came to a stop and a boy of 10 or 11 hopped out to help an elderly gentleman who was struggling to pull his trash cart to the curb. Driving by and watching the boy and the old man work together to move the cart made me think. Would I have done the same? Sadly, I don’t think I would have. What bothers me most is I’m not sure why I can say that.

LOL

I can't even remember where I snagged this picture from, but every time I see it in my photo I laugh. Hope you laugh too. Click to enlarge.

UPDATE: Go here and read more about Birdman weapons systems, I did and laughing even harder than before.

Saturday

Ross and I went up to my folks Saturday with a couple of objectives in mind. One was to convert the electrical system on the old 8N tractor from 6 to 12 volt. That went well; of course I didn’t stop there. I became frustrated at the inconsistent flow of fuel and pulled the tank. Of course it was full of crud, mostly rust flakes, no big surprise the thing is 54 years old. Pressure washing the inside helped, there’s still rust in the tank; the only other solution is to replace it or have a radiator shop acid wash and coat it, both costly. I guess I can live with a little rust in the sediment bowl.

Secondly, I wanted to shoot dad’s new revolver, he hadn’t even shot it yet. What a beautiful weapon! Taurus model 617 total titanium in .357 Mag, he started out 7 rounds of .38 special, after shooting through that we went to .357 Mag, he was impressed to say the least by the difference between the two rounds. This weapon is amazingly accurately, for a 2” barrel, much better than the Ruger SP 101 in .357 Mag that I used to carry. Go here to check out the specs.

Beer snob

Dog days, it’s that time again in Ravenna when anybody who’s anyone in town gathers at the park for an evening out. There’s food, fun, beer, and music at Ravenna’s Dog Day’s.

I must not be anyone or just anti-social because I’ve lived here for 14 years and the other night was the first time I went. The kids always go, its two blocks away and they love playing the games the church always sets up.

The kids had been down there for a while, I thought I would amble down and have a look’ see. Well it was everything I imagined it to be, the kids were engrossed in the games, the band was playing and people were having a great time. I made my way towards what I believed to be the beer stand, it was a token set up so I found a near by booth and bought a $2.50 token which I soon turn into a $2.50 Bud light.

Yes I’m a beer snob, I only bought this beer out civic duty, and it goes to the Lions Club. I can’t remember the last time I had such a tasteless beer. I normally choose to drink draft beer if at all possible, Guinness, Heineken something with taste. I sat at a picnic table watching the kids nursing my can of pilsner, it was soon gone and I had had my fill of dog days. I headed home, packing some of the loot the kids had won.

Turf pest

This is my first ever "hand kill" of my lawn nemesis Scalopus aquaticus AKA "the mole"
I had noted the grass around the pool was getting long and trim. Not wanting to use the weed whacker near the sides of the pool I opted for the traditional hand shears. Bending down to begin the job, I saw movement in the grass and the unmistakable fur of this varmint. With little hesitation I skewered the pest. My aim was true, right thru the center between the shoulders. As I lifted the creature, still run thru on the shears it showed little life and quickly succumbed to its injuries.

This is my 2nd kill for the year. Walking across the front lawn this morning I saw evidence that there’s been a replacement for my earlier kill. Fortunately these pests are very territorial; one in itself can wreak havoc on your turf.

Interesting flowers

I've yet to try to identify these small flowers, in this picture, if you look closely you should be able to see the bee collecting nectar. Click on picture to enlarge.
Update: After a bit of research it turns out that this a very interesting plant. Monotropa Unflora, the ghost plant, also known as Indian pipe.

Happy 231st Birthday America

As I was hiking this morning I came across the remnants of this birthday celebration. The scale of this mess is not captured by this single photo Not that I was surprised by this total disregard for the environment, just bent me the wrong way.

Saturday, June 23, 2007

A few weeks ago Ross and I spent a few days in Grand Marais, staying with my folks at woodland park. Above is a shot from the roll away(log slide) at Grand Sable Dunes, 300 feet above Lake Superior.

While waiting on the dock in Munising to take the Pictured Rocks boat tour, this plane landed, do you call it that in the water? picked up a passenger and took off. The weather that day was prefect, practically no wind out on the lake.

I was taken on this same cruise when I was Ross's age, I think I enjoyed the sights more now than 30 years ago.

My only regret is the lack of a quality camera, these photo hardly do this scenery justice.

This outcrop is Indian Head, yes it sorta looks like a Indians head, use your imagination.

This is spray falls, the captain said this was a bonus to see they normally don't cruise this far but, due to the great weather the boat made good time. I would recommend this cruise to anyone with a few hours to spend in Munising.

Homework

I’ve been avoiding it all week, but it’s almost Friday and still I have a major work load and my entire day tomorrow is booked with design reviews. So I’ve been working since I came home at six-thirty, my VPN connection is thru Oslo, Norway so speed is just not happening; however with two computers running here I’m getting quite a bit done.

A test I didn't study for

I received an odd phone call this morning, the gal in HR asked me to come to her office.
I had been selected of a drug screen. No worries here, I’m clean, I don’t do drugs…..anymore. Just glad I could go and didn’t have to wait around. When I worked at AutoDie years ago they had the same random testing. They would send you to the clinic right across the street for your test, when I worked afternoons there was a guy who sat there for almost six hours before he went, nothing they could do about it.

Whats going on

Not much going on my way this week so far. I’ve been staying late at work, finishing up designs I have reviews for on Friday . By the time I get home at 6:30 or 7:00 have some dinner, well lets just say I'm done for the evening. I’ve left my laptop at work the last couple of night just so I don’t spend all night working, even thought I found my self researching H8 fits for a 28mm hole this evening, which by the way is +.033mm its hard to stop.

Saturday, May 05, 2007

House cleaning, literally

On the northern exposure of my attached garage was a nasty film mildew, dirt and who knows what. I don’t have this problem on any of the other northern walls, could have been caused by the close proximity of a recently removed spruce tree. The pressure washer made short work of this unsightly mess.

I have no morels.

Hiked a few miles this morning in search of morels, only to return empty handed. This has been one of my most disappointing seasons so far. Years ago I never found them this early, but the last few years I have, my hope is that its just not happened yet.

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

Day off, sorta

After falling asleep around six this morning my wife brings me my cell at 7:30 saying its been ringing, messages from vender's. Make a couple calls and back to see the sandman. 11:00 rolls around and I'm up again and out of bed. I have a new laptop with a VPN (virtual private network) card which allows me to work from home, too slow for serious design work but lets me access my work email and files. So I spent a couple hours taking care of business. Ross had his school work done, so we drove over to Gross park. Nice walking trails cover the park land, we spent an hour or so hiking around. When we finished up there we drove to a vender that I do work with to look at a couple of jobs. All and all, a nice afternoon, now I have to go finish a few jobs outside, my work is never done!

Off to bed

I've been up now for a little over 24 hours now, got a call at 9:30 last night about trouble with a tool at the shop. Left there at 3:45, just trying to kill a few minutes before the Mrs. gets up and I'm off to bed.

Sunday, April 29, 2007

Wild Turkey

Rolled out of the sack at 0700, the Mrs. was already up, grabbed a cup of coffee and headed east for my folks house. Stopping at my folks mailbox to pickup the Sunday paper, I could see there where a few birds in the drive, a ½ mile dirt lane. I reached over and grabbed my binoculars and quietly open the door and stepped out for a closer look.

Three big tom’s with their tails all spread, vying for the attention of one hen. I watched for a minute and then started down the drive on foot following the edge of the woods looking for morals, went for about a hundred yards and stepped back out to the roads edge and the turkeys were gone. Someday I will add these wary birds to my hunting quarry.

Outdoors

Yesterday my son and I went north looking for the elusive moral. We scouted for new spots in state land near white cloud, no luck. We did however stumble across this handsome fellow sunning himself in a clearing.

By the time I had taken the second picture, he or she was mad and was vibrating its tail like a rattler, and as you can see turned to face me down.

What's going on

I’ve tired of writing about politics and current events as is apparent by my lack of posting. Posting from here on out will be about whatever is going on in my head, not to say there won’t be any politics and current events, I’ve just tired of that steady diet.

Ok then; Friday a project I’ve been working on came to fruition. This to date is the biggest project of my career and involves moving business from a company within our conglomerate to an independent local company. This move will save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, perhaps a million on tooling costs. And will generate more sales due to completive tooling costs. This move rolls much more responsibility onto my shoulders and increases my work load, but it was the right move to make for the good of our company. I’ve become quite an unpopular fellow overseas due to this and there are factions that hope to see failure in this project; I will however, proceed with confidence and make this a success not only for my company but for myself.

I laughed when I read this headline. Not because its funny when gang bangers got shot, but the answer is so obvious, I can't believe they would post this as a headline. I know where is neighborhood is at, the corner of crackville and gangland and the fact that two in one family have been shot means; drug deal gone bad, somebody disrespected or fight over turf. These are the problems that Jason Whitlock is talking about in my previous post.

Capitalism, pure and simple

Yesterday I finally got off the couch and did something; I’ve had a chest cold this last week and have done nothing but rest. Driving to one of my favorite hiking area’s I was listening to a local talker on Wood radio. Yes, he was all wound up over the Imus firing and like many was looking at this in the wrong light. First off he claimed we’ve empowered Sharpton and Jackson. Wrong, it was the big media MSNBC and SeeBS who fired Imus and empowered the race baiters. This entire issue is over money, and if Imus can bring ratings, money to another broadcaster he’ll be back on the air.

I've posted more over here as C_it1/2full. This guy has it right and takes the race baiters to the mat.

Leadership or lack there of

Over at the GOP house page is another fine example of the government that the people of southeast Michigan deserve, after all, they voted these people into power. Read about this guy

From the article:
Cushingberry’s attorney, Gerald Evelyn, said his client is innocent. He’s a lifelong public servant who gave the responsibility for campaign statements to a contractor, Evelyn said.
This statement really sums it up quite well, he's a victim who's been doing it all for us. Term limits anyone?

Back to the old grind

Spring break is over, kids are back in school, and Easter weekend was nice, even though the weather was crap. I managed to load about 500 rounds of .40 cal, finished the tongue and groove paneling in the downstairs bathroom, and had a nice dinner at my folks. Already looking forward to the summer holidays.
